Luther Ingram   Singer, Songwriter

Luther Thomas Ingram was born November 30, 1937 in Jackson, Tennessee.  His professional career began in New York.  With Mack Rice he helped compose "Respect Yourself" for the Staple Singers, while several of his own releases were R&B hits.

In 1972, he recorded the original version of the classic Banks/Jackson/Hampton song "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)" which went on to sell over a million copies and reached number 3 in the U.S. pop charts.  He followed with "I'll Be Your Shelter (In Time of Storm)" and proceeded to build a substantial body of work.  He returned to the R&B chart in 1986 with "Baby Don't Go Too Far".

"Ingram died Monday (March 18, 2007) at a Belleville, IL. hospital after suffering for years from diabetes, kidney disease and partial blindness, his wife, Jacqui Ingram, said Tuesday (March 19, 2007).  He had lived in nearby O'Fallon, IL, outside St. Louis, for 10 years."    The Jackson Sun March 21, 2007
