Jackson Madison County Library 2008 Summer Reading Program

Events at Main Downtown Library

Every Tuesday and Friday, 10:30 am - Preschool Storytime (Little Friends Room)

Don’t forget our preschool storytime each Tuesday and Friday morning! These storytimes are developed for the preschool crowd (18 mos – 5 years) and we have a great time! (It’s the same program both days…so pick one session weekly to attend!) There will be NO STORYTIME on June 3 or Friday July 4.

Wednesday June 4, 2:30pm - Animals of the Rainforest presented by Natural History Educational Company (Program Center)

Join us as we kick off this year’s Summer Reading Program Bob from the NHEC. They will be sharing a variety of animals and bugs such as Giant African Millipedes, a South African Bullfrogs, a Burmese Python, and a White-nosed Coatimundi. Out of Sight Craft Week I (Little Friend’s Room)

Come in as a kid, leave as an astronaut! We will be creating an astronaut costume: outfit, helmet and air support pack! Ages: 5-12 (Child must be able to use scissors and glue.)

Pre-registration required for this event. Sign up at the circulation desk of the main/downtown library beginning June 4. Maximum of twenty children will be registered per session.

Wednesday June 11, 1pm - Puppet Show *note time difference!* (Program Center)

Join us as the Shiloh Regional Library presents their yearly Summer Reading Puppet Show. Always a great time! Ages: 2-12 years

Wednesday June 18, 2:30pm - Magician Justin Chandler (Program Center)

Award winning magician Justin Chandler will wow us with his talent as he performs his show, "The Magic of Imagination." This show encourages us to use our imaginations and rediscover the magic in books. Find out more by visiting his website: http://www.chandlermagic.com/Motivation.html.

Saturday June 21,11am - Visit from Local Author Joyce Corley (Program Center)

Jackson resident Joyce Corley will be here at the library to read her book The Elf and the Umbrella, a story about an elf caught in the rain and how he discovers how useful a mushroom can be! She will have copies of her book for purchase and will be available to sign them. Ages: all ages

Movie Madness I (Program Center)

Thursday June 26, 10:30 am

It is movie time at the library. Join us as we watch the movie Muppets from Space, a "hilarious extraterrestrial adventure about the search for Gonzo's past!" Movie is rated G and is 88 minutes long. Feel free to bring cushions to sit on to get comfy, and we’ll provide a snack!!

Wednesday June 25, 2:30 pm - Visit from Local Author Wanda Stanfield (Program Center)

Jackson resident Wanda Stanfield will be here at the library to read her book Twig, a story about the life's journey of a little tree, and tells a story about how fragile nature is and how the spirit of one little tree persevered. She will have copies of her book for purchase and will be available to sign them. Ages: all ages

Wednesday July 2, 2:30 pm - Community Service Project: Letters to Soldiers (Program Center)

Help celebrate Independence Day by writing letters and thank you notes to those who defend our country. We will have all the supplies, just come to write a letter or thank you note to our military serving in Iraq. Ages: all ages

Come in as a human, leave as an alien! We will be making alien masks and flying saucers. Ages: 5-12 (Child must be able to use scissors and glue.)

Wednesday July 9, 2:30pm - Visit from Local Author Hayden Hooper (Program Center)

Brownsville resident Hayden Hooper will be here at the library to read her book Gabriel’s Garden, a true story about Jackson’s new playground called Gabriel’s Garden. Movie Madness II (Program Center)

It’s movie time at the library. Join us as we watch the Disney hit High School Musical 2. What time is it? It’s SUMMERTIME! Movie is rated G and is 120 minutes long. Feel free to bring cushions to sit on to get comfy, and we’ll provide a snack!!

July 16, 2:30 pm Mad Scientists Present Up, Up and Away (Program Center)

Those Mad Scientists from Memphis will amaze us with this special event that illustrates the principles of air pressure. Watch as a soda bottle is crushed by the atmosphere, a hot air balloon is made out of a dry cleaning bag and other fun demonstrations! TICKETS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. FREE TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT EITHER LIBRARY ON JUNE 16. EACH PERSON MUST HAVE A TICKET TO BE ADMITTED TO THIS PROGRAM. This is due to a requirement of crowd control per the Mad Scientists. July 23, all day - Last Day to Redeem Reading Log Prizes

Today is the final day to redeem prizes for your reading logs for books read through July 16.
