Welcome to the Jackson-Madison County Library

Jackson-Madison County Library
433 East Lafayette St.
Jackson, TN 38301

The Jackson/Madison County Library serves as a keystone for Jackson and Madison County. The Main Library in downtown Jackson is the focus  for the collections of books, videos, DVDs, compact discs, books-on-tape, and other materials and formats. Its central location makes it the center for research for all ages and for local history.

The Library’s Home Page is the "Internet Branch Library" of the system. It informs users of programs and activities scheduled at the Main Library. It connects patrons to the world through specialized links and categories and allows local library patrons to borrow books from other libraries. Patrons can access their accounts to see and to renew items they have checked out. If you have specific questions or comments about the Home Page, please contact the Webmaster.

The Tennessee Room has expanded greatly over the past few years and continues to add more valuable resources for local history and genealogical research.

The Library Program Center will accommodate up to 130 people. The remodeled Anne Thurmond Board Room is available for smaller groups and for the boards associated with the library. The Little Friends Room is the specially decorated area for children’s programs and weekly story hours. Call the Library about the policies and use of these rooms.

Through the generosity of Mrs. Glenda Baker, artist Tim Pace of Finger, Tennessee, has designed "Madison, the Reading Mantis," a metal artwork. This unique sculpture will be a landmark for downtown Jackson and a symbol for the library. Some parts are from materials damaged by the tornadoes of May 2003 and it stands at the site of a tree removed by the storm.

Since that time also, the area on the western side of the library has been converted into a focal point of beauty and interest. "Rotary Park," a project of the Jackson Rotary Club, was funded through major donations by the City of Jackson, Madison County Commission, efforts by the Library Foundation and many other supporters. Its waterfall and fountain and other features attract many to spend quiet time in meditation and reflection. It is open during normal library hours.

The Library's seven-member citizen Board of Trustees, appointed by the City of Jackson and by the Madison County Commission, approves the long-range goals, budgets, capital projects, and plans for the Library System and is in regular contact with elected officials for needed support for all aspects.

The Friends of the Jackson-Madison County Library group provides special support for library activities and programs, such as the Noontime Book Reviews, and always welcomes new members.

The Jackson-Madison County Library Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to seek and be able to receive large contributions from individuals and corporations.  These funds are directed to the library for major projects that go beyond the revenue for operating budgets.

After a thorough review of the needs of the Library system by professional consultants, the new goals and objectives of the Library will be combined with those outlined by the Board’s Strategic Plan, by Madison County 20/20’s Strategic Agenda, and the Urban Land Institute’s report to the City of Jackson. Efforts will then be pursued to create a "Library of the Future" for Jackson and Madison County, a public library for all local citizens for the next twenty years.

Any questions or comments about the Library, its services and programs may be sent to the Executive Director or in writing to:  Executive Director, Jackson-Madison County Library, 433 East Lafayette Street, Jackson, TN 38301.   Please direct any special compliments for quality of service, etc. to the Board of Trustees or to city or county elected officials.
